Rational Point Counts for del Pezzo Surfaces over Finite Fields and Coding Theory

چکیده
The goal of this thesis is to apply an approach due to Elkies to study the distribution of rational point counts for certain families of curves and surfaces over finite fields. A vector space of polynomials over a fixed finite field Fq gives rise to a linear code, and the weight enumerator of this code gives information about point count distributions. The MacWilliams theorem gives a relation between the weight enumerator of a linear code and the weight enumerator of its dual code. For certain codes C coming from families of varieties where it is not known how to determine the distribution of point counts directly, we analyze low-weight codewords of the dual code and apply the MacWilliams theorem and its generalizations to gain information about the weight enumerator of C. These low-weight dual codes can be described in terms of point sets that fail to impose independent conditions on this family of varieties. Our main results concern rational point count distributions for del Pezzo surfaces of degree 2, and for certain families of genus 1 curves. These weight enumerators have interesting geometric and coding theoretic applications for small q.

On the unirationality of del Pezzo surfaces of degree 2
Among geometrically rational surfaces, del Pezzo surfaces of degree 2 over a field k containing at least one point are arguably the simplest that are not known to be unirational over k. Looking for k-rational curves on these surfaces, we extend some earlier work of Manin on this subject. We then focus on the case where k is a finite field, where we show that all except possibly three explicit d...
متن کاملDegree of Unirationality for Del Pezzo Surfaces over Finite Fields
We address the question of the degree of unirational parameterizations of degree four and degree three del Pezzo surfaces. Specifically we show that degree four del Pezzo surfaces over finite fields admit degree two parameterizations and minimal cubic surfaces admit parameterizations of degree 6. It is an open question whether or not minimal cubic surfaces over finite fields can admit degree 3 ...
متن کاملWeak Approximation for General Degree Two Del Pezzo Surfaces
We address weak approximation for certain del Pezzo surfaces defined over the function field of a curve. We study the rational connectivity of the smooth locus of degree two del Pezzo surfaces with two A1 singularities in order to prove weak approximation for degree two del Pezzo surfaces with square-free discriminant.
متن کامل2 00 6 UNIVERSAL TORSORS OVER DEL PEZZO SURFACES AND RATIONAL POINTS by Ulrich Derenthal & Yuri Tschinkel
— We discuss Manin’s conjecture concerning the distribution of rational points of bounded height on Del Pezzo surfaces, and its refinement by Peyre, and explain applications of universal torsors to counting problems. To illustrate the method, we provide a proof of Manin’s conjecture for the unique split singular quartic Del Pezzo surface with a singularity of type D4.

For any number field k, upper bounds are established for the number of k-rational points of bounded height on non-singular del Pezzo surfaces defined over k, which are equipped with suitable conic bundle structures over k.
